A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Southern Turkey and Syria early February 6th. Thousands are expected to have lost their lives, with countless more injured. Entire buildings collapsed and flattened, leaving hundreds of thousands displaced outside in the snow and cold. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit Turkey since 1939. Because of GEM Europe’s propositioning for European disasters, their team was able to deploy immediately the same morning and is on the ground offering assistance and supplies. The initial commitment of supplies is $10M. GEM's journey began with grassroots community engagement as its founder, Michael Capponi, and board members have been involved in supporting some of the most significant global tragedies. For two decades, the team has assisted in over 295 missions around the world since the 1999 Kosovo Crisis, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 to the current 2020 pandemic.
